Today's Theme: Bright Ideas

Martin Rock led the club in a speech marathon filled with bright ideas. In place of the traditional invocator, jokemaster, wordmaster, table topics, grammarian and general evaluator roles was a meeting filled with 4 excellent speeches and evaluations. Dorsey Riddick kept and reported times in his role as timekeeper and Wade Hudson served as the ballot counter.

Chris Richter demonstrated his strength in story telling when he gave his speech, “Rethinking Football.” Chris persuaded the audience that more emphasis should be placed on safety in football as he shared the devastating effects of concussions from high impact sports. Stephen Beausang followed with “Why History Counts” and gave examples of how knowing where we have come from is critical to getting where we need to be. The third speaker was Tom Beaulieu. Tom’s speech “Lost in Translation” was filled with vocal variety as he described an encounter with his Polish neighbor. Brian Simpson concluded the speaker’s portion of the meeting with an inspiring motivational speech about the seeds that are planted in our lives and the outcomes we can see from them.

The five evaluations were given by Sari Salek, Andrew Soloninka, Jillian Bowlin and Chuck Roylston. Each presented great feedback to the speakers and offered suggestions for improvement.

18 people were in attendance, including one guest, Phyllis Westerman. Martin called upon Phyllis for feedback while Wade counted the votes.

Martin presented awards to the best evaluator, Chuck Roylston and best speaker, Brian Simpson.
