Today's Theme: Childhood Summer Fun

Meeting Recap: Thursday, August 5, 2010

Andrew Soloninka called the meeting to order at 7:00 a.m. and introduced Kelly Lingerfelt as toastmaster of the meeting. Kelly led a packed room of 31 attendees with the theme, “Childhood Summer Fun.” Cherry McRae gave the invocation, Johnny Carr shared a joke and Matt Markowitz introduced the word of the day, Copacetic. Copacetic is slang for fine; completely satisfactory; ok. Andrew Soloninka gave the time parameters for the speakers.

All three speakers spoke from the competent communicator manual. Tom Beaulieu gave his fifth speech, “Obvious.” Tom shared three humorous examples of experiences where he overlooked the obvious. Lorenzo King gave his sixth speech, “Renew and Think.” Lorenzo was practicing a speech he plans of giving to a church group about making the decision to stop taking pharmaceutical medications and to rely on his faith. Uzoma Nwosu gave his fourth speech, “no motion.” Uzoma grabbed the audience’s attention when he confessed that he is naturally lazy.

Mark Leonard led table topics by calling on Gwen Vass to share a winter childhood memory, Wade Hudson to pick a replacement wedding singer in a hypothetical scenario where he loses his voice, and Sreekanth “Sunny” Nandagiri to share what he would do if he won the lottery for a second time (after spending all of his initial earnings).

Kevin Coppage, Bob Crump and Mike Eaves evaluated the speakers and provided excellent feedback for everyone attending. Kevin commented on the great energy and recommended the use of visual aids to reinforce an image the speaker is trying to portray. Bob suggested having facts to back up points shared. Mike praised the effective use of startling statements as an opening statement and pointed out the opportunity for improvement in keeping hands at ones side instead of clasping.

Chris Colburn gave the grammarian’s report and Tom Presley evaluated the overall meeting.

Awards were presented to:
• Best Table Topics: Wade Hudson
• Best Evaluator: Mike Eaves
• Best Speaker: Tom Beaulieu

Kelly called on the three guests, Chris, Susan and Roxanne and John to provide feedback on the meeting, as well. They all had positive and encouraging things to say about a well-run and efficient meeting.
