Meeting Recap: October 7, 2010
Sergeant of Arms Andrew Soloninka introduced Toastmaster Bob Crump, who led the 7:00 a.m. meeting with the theme of October Favorites. Each participant shared his or her favorite October pastime. Stephen Beausang gave an inspiring invocation with words from Nelson Mandela. Matt Markowitz served as Joke Master. Charles Gupton introduced the word of the day—deleterious, which means having a harmful effect. Johnny Carr was the timekeeper for the meeting.
Attendees were in for a special treat because each speaker was giving his first speech, the icebreaker, from the Competent Communication manual. Chris Crane described his life as it compares to a Mark Twain's idea that each life is full of drama, comedy and tragedy. Sreekanth "Sunny" Nandagiri shared his journey from India to South Carolina to Raleigh in "Seriously Challenging Myself." Dorsey Riddick completed the icebreakers with his life story and the consistency of change within.
Alyssa Mozingo led Table Topics and called on Sari Salek, Mike Eaves and Jillian Bowlin with questions pertaining to the State Fair.
Lorenzo King, Chris Richter and Peter Tepfer evaluated the new speakers. They commented on the natural strengths the speakers already possessed and encouraged them to try a few new things, including where to stand, using hand gestures, using story telling and putting notes on note cards instead of paper.
Charles Ibeziako reported on the positive uses of grammar throughout the meaning and where improvements could be made with use of filler words. Jillian Bowlin gave the General Evaluator's report.
Bob asked for feedback from guest Brent Gilmore and reviewed club business before presenting awards to:
