Capital City Toastmasters Meeting Recap - April 29, 2010
Submitted by Brian Simpson
Today's Theme: Childhood Mischief
Right on time as always, Dean DiLillo (Sgt. at Arms) kicked off our meeting at 7am. He introduced Wade Hudson, today's Toastmaster. Wade explained how he came up with the 'Childhood Mischief' theme and shared a few of his own funny childhood troublemaking stories.
Dean returned to the lecturn to provide us with the Invocation, reading an excerpt from Art of Living: The Classical Manual on Virtue, Happiness, and Effectiveness (Epictetus).
Kelly Lingerfelt told a great joke about a few folks who encountered a brown bear.
April Young filled in as WordMaster, and asked us to remember today's Word of the Day: Quash.
Kevin Coppage explained the time parameters, then Wade welcomed our three guests at today's meeting.
Gwen Vass introduced Jillian Bowlin, who presented a 5-7 minute speech entitled, "Phobia Free" (CC Manual Project #2 - Organize Your Speech). Ariel Ward introduced Matt Markowitz, who gave his 4-6 minute IceBreaker speech (CC Manual Project #1). John Fredette introduced Colleen Slaughter, who gave a 5-7 minute speech called, "It's OK to Feel" (Project #9 - Persuade with Power; Just one more speech to go, and we'll give Colleen her standing ovation for completing the CC Manual).
Vernita Griffith ran Table Topics, selecting Martin Rock to respond to a question about "little white lies" and Tom Presley for a question about his ancestors. Both used the Word of the Day, quash.
After a terrific round of evaluations from Gwen, Ariel and John, Stephen Beausang gave the Grammarian's report and Simon Phillips-Hughes gave the General Evaluator's report. Simon wrapped up his report with a comment that "Capital City Toastmasters is the best way to start a Thursday morning."
Award Winners:
Best Table Topics: Tom Presley
