Today's theme: "Favorite Birthdays"
Today we celebrated April’s Birthday by having her lead us as our Toastmaster with the theme to share a quick anecdote from your favorite birthday. Led by 3 prepared, thoughtful and well presented speakers, April’s birthday party was quite a hit.
Mike E. delivered an invocation about Harry Truman’s journey to the White House. Mike concluded with an inspirational quote: “to succeed you must first improve, to improve you must first practice, to practice you must first fail.” Andrew S. followed with a joke about a renaissance band cheering up a king. Ariel W. gave us “jubilant” as the word of the day. Jubilant means showing great joy. Ariel chose this word to intentionally for April’s birthday. Dennis explained the various time restrictions.
Tom B. initiated the speeches with his talk, “Breathe.” Tom grabbed the audience from the get go as he shared his concerns about the future of our air quality and encouraged us all to join Sierra Club (www.sierraclub.org). Colleen followed with her talk, “Half way there.” She shared the joy she’s experiencing as she goes through the metamorphosis physically and mentally toward motherhood. And finally, Kelly L. won “The Boomerang Award” and shared her observations, highlights and merits of her past and present stints at our Capital City Toastmasters club.
Jason G. led Table Topics and stayed with the birthday theme asking Kerry L. to tell how he would cope with realizing he’d forgotten his wife’s birthday and asking Kevin C. to go back in time to advise himself on his own 12th birthday. Both guys delivered clever, interesting responses.
Johnny C., Martin R. and Trey B. provided valuable feedback in their evaluations. All three did a great job of complimenting specifics and offering specific improvement instead of rehashing the speeches.
Chris R. provided the grammarian report and I gave the general evaluation.
27 folks attended including 4 guests: Travis, Tonya, Abdel, and Sharon
Award Winners:
Best Speaker: Kelly L.
Best Evaluator: Martin R.
Best Table Topics: Kevin C.
